Being in the Military gives a person the chance to try many different types of physical training routines. Two years ago I was introduced to a program that was fun and very different from the others I have tried. CrossFit changed my way of thinking as far as workouts go. I remember seeing an article about how some celebrities did the program to get ready for an upcoming movie. Most of my Battle Buddies had been doing CrossFit for some time before I got up the courage to try it. I want to share with you the top four things I found out about myself while doing the CrossFit program.
This program is not for the weak at heart
When I started this routine, I said to myself “This looks so easy!” Well, it was like a slap to the face. The first exercise I did was the tire flip. The length of the course didn’t seem long but after the first three flips, I started to lose my ability to push through. One of my Battles yelled to me “Don’t give in to your weak heart!” This was just the motivation I needed because I was older and felt I was in better shape than my younger peers.
One week, I am done
After the first week, I was done. I wanted to go back to my gym workout. You know the one. The workout where you sign in at the gym, walk slowly to the water fountain, drink as much water as I can, and then stand around for minutes on end waiting for the machine you want to work out on to open. I didn’t realize at the time that I was building the strength up in my back, arms and core. My help came in the form of my peers coaching me on telling me to give it more time. Thank goodness I did.
This is for everyone
I started CrossFit because I knew I could do the program and have fun with it. One day our squad leader asked if he could start working out with us. He notices the improvements we were having on our physical fitness test and wanted in on the secret. This guy was not in shape at all. Years of working out at the gym just like I used to make him sluggish. We showed him a few exercises like the battle rope, flipping tires, and climbing the rope with only your arms. It was at this time I got to see what my friends saw the first time I did the program. It has been six months and our squad leader is still with us.
If you are going to do it, then do it.
This program is a great workout program. Don’t come out with the mindset to fail. Like everything you do for the first time, it takes a while to get used to it. The exercises are hard but with the right people by your side, it is extremely fun. Put on your game face, wear your positive attitude like a shirt and come out ready to tackle the possibility that you can do anything.
Since I started doing Cross-fit with my Battle Buddies my back pain has gone away. My arms are bigger and fuller than they have ever been. My core is tight and the stomach fat has almost disappeared. I am about to turn 37 this year and I feel like I am about to turn twenty one again. So with that said, get off your couch and get into a class or go online to find workouts to start.
